| Abstract: | Results of a successful human validation trial of 1.3 atmosphere (ATA) PO2-in-nitrogen (PO2-in-N2) decompression profiles for use with the MK 16 MOD 1 Underwater Breathing Apparatus (UBA) are presented. Twelve (12) dive profiles involving repetitive dives, decompression dives, and repetitive decompression dives ranging in depth from 80 to 190 feet of seawater (fsw) were tested a total of 325 times. Three cases of decompression sickness occurred in the first portion of the trial, when schedules computed assuming that the diver breathes 1.3 ATA PO2-in-N2 at depths greater than 33 fsw were tested. Schedules tested in the last portion of the trial were calculated under the assumption that the diver breathes 1.25 ATA PO2-in-N2 at depths deeper than 33 fsw. No additional cases of DCS occurred with these schedules. Diver inspired PO2 was measured and used to estimate the risk of central nervous system (CNS) toxicity for 199 of the dives. Decompression tables for use with the MK 16 MOD 1 with air diluent are presented, with recommendations to reduce risk of oxygen toxicity |
